A brief Biography of Konrad Singer
Konrad Singer (1917-2013), the adopted son of Moriz Scheyer, was born to middle-class Czech-Austrian Jewish parents in southern Bohemia, and educated in Vienna. A talented musician and committed humanist, he devoted himself to science, and after the Anschluss in 1938 succeeded in emigrating to the UK, where he was able both to continue his studies and puruse a successful research career. He was married to Jean (née Longstaff), who also worked with him; they are survived by two sons, Michael, a mathematician, and Peter (P. N.), the translator of Asylum. In his 80s he wrote a memoir of his early life and his experiences as a refugee, which also touches on the events and persons described in Asylum.
